CECIL BILLY

Cecil Billy was born at Esperanza on Friday December 13, 1963 to Robert and Diane Billy. Esperanza Inlet is a remote area on the north western side of Vancouver Island.

When Billy was in his 20’s, he apprenticed with a cabinet maker, and learned how to join wood pieces together. Billy often works with yellow cedar, and is well known among native art enthusiasts on Vancouver Island, as an artist with a flair for original ideas, subtle details, and cheeky characters.

Cecil Billy is well known for adding appendages to his pieces, which very few carvers do on two dimensional pieces. Having been trained as a furniture cabinet maker, his wood joining skills have given him the ability to infuse humor into his pieces, which are also often adorned with abalone inlay and copper overlay.

One of the main challenges of inlaying shell into wood is getting it level with the surface, and this is just one of Billy’s talent and skills. Billy has a large following of private collectors on Vancouver Island, and his work has been sold in the US market and shipped internationally. Billy is retired from carving now, though we remain hopeful that we may yet see more of his work.
