DANCE OF THE LITTLE OLD MEN

The Dance of the Little Old Men is an old Purhepecha dance from the Lake Patzcuaro region of Michoacan.  Here we have seven dancers dressed in the traditional attire of the "viejitos" dancers - a dance that is generally performed by four dancers.  It is believed the number four is significant due to the four elements, earth, fire, air and water - as well as the four colours of maize - being red, yellow, white and blue.  All of these colours have been incorporated into the costumes of these dancers. As this region is famed for being an agricultural strong-hold in Mexico, Teofila has represented one significant force behind Michoacan's fertile soil - the Volcano.
