RORY DAWSON

Rory Dawson was born in July of 1969 to Roy Dawson (Gwasala-Nakwaxdaxw) and Delores Prevost nee Williams, of Tlowitsis (Tourner Island). Rory Dawson comes from the remote village of Gwa’yi (Kingcome Inlet), and is Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw of the Kwakwaka’wakw.

Dawson says: “I was deeply immersed in my cultural heritage at an early age, and I have had many opportunities in observing many fine artists at work.” Some of these artists include his nephew Gilbert Dawson, David Neel (Kwakiutl – Fort Rupert), James Taylor (‘Namgis – Alert Bay), and the late Rod Modeste, who was instrumental in the revival of Coast Salish art.

Dawson designs unique jewellery, hand engraved on Sterling Silver, Gold and Copper.  Dawson draws from a variety of stylized motifs, which are positioned onto a variety of shapes, from oval, teardrop, circular and rectangular pendants & earrings, to toe rings, narrow and wide bracelets and even his noteworthy picks, which make personalized gifts for guitar players as they come with an original motif on one side, and can also be engraved on the other.

In closing, Dawson says: “It is important for us artists to learn and remember the stories, teaching, songs, dances and honor of our ancestors by sharing and passing them onto our children. Being a parent and representing my ancestral heritage with respect and honor by being drug and alcohol free is most important to me!”
