RUBY HENDERSON JOSEPH

Ruby Henderson Joseph was born in Campbell River on July 1, 1951 to Sam Henderson and Mae Quocksister Henderson. Growing up in the Henderson family, Joseph was surrounded by her culture from birth. She married Dick Joseph in 1973, and spent the following years raising their two children. It wasn’t until 1990, when Joseph began applying Kwakwaka’wakw designs to her ceramics, under the artistic guidance of her husband. She was immediately successful as both an artist and business woman, selling to art galleries around BC, and at private shows and festivals.

Joseph’s eye for design and color combinations was complimented by the 24K liquid gold outlining that she applied to every design. Not only did Joseph produce elegant tea pots, mugs, platters and bowls, she also used funky colors that appealed to younger collectors. Her vases and lamps also ranged from elegant to whimsical, as did her very popular Christmas ornament balls. From trivets to spirit bears to wall hangings, Joseph was both passionate and prolific as a ceramicist. Sadly, Ruby Joseph passed away on July 23, 2009.We are sometimes contacted by collectors who are downsizing and looking to sell pieces from their personal collections.
