BACK STRAP LOOM COLLECTION
These lovely masks are woven on manual back-strap looms in the Maya village of Zinacantan, in Chiapas Mexico. These are a tight weave, and are thick enough to make it impossible to blow out a candle. What we love most about these masks is their practical head-band style. Fit the mask to your face and tie the bottom string at the nape of your neck. Now you can easily remove the mask, or pull it down around your neck if you are stopping to eat something.
Convenient and practical, these are also lovely examples of a medium that could soon become a dying art. We thank you for supporting indigenous artists and their techniques.
