VINCENT SHAUGHNESSY

Kwakwaka’wakw artist Vincent Shaughnessy was born in ‘Yalis (Alert Bay) in 1959 and belongs to the ‘Namgis. His grandfather Arthur Shaughnessy was a hereditary Chief of Gwa’yi (Kingcome Inlet) and noted artist.

Shaughnessy was raised learning about his ancestral cultural ways and stories, and began carving wood in 1973, apprenticing under Tony Hunt Sr, and carving at the Arts of the Raven under the supervision of Calvin Hunt and John Livingston. Shaughnessy has worked alongside master carvers Beau Dick and Wayne Alfred, and in 1988 he assisted with the rebuilding of the Big House, carving the totem poles and painting the house front.

Shaughnessy has collaborated with other artists on several canoes, totem poles and has worked as a solo artist, producing many beautiful masks and headdresses for both the art market, and ceremonial use in the Big House.
